70's Ranch Reconstruction
This standard 70’s ranch house situated on an expansive waterfront lot was in need of a complete renovation for a growing family. Several small rooms on the first floor were opened up and a new Kitchen and Great Room were relocated to take advantage of grand water views. A remodeled Master Suite also offers a visual connection with nature through new French doors leading to a private porch by the pool. Raising the roof between two new gables expanded the second floor facilitating a layout for four generous bedrooms. On the exterior, a dramatic transformation is accomplished with the subtle texture of cedar shakes, simple trim features and spare details evoking the image of a traditional New England coastal home. The expanded front porch is accentuated with a nested gable welcoming guests to this “new classic” home with contemporary style.
Tilghman Island Transformation
This vintage waterman’s cottage, having provided shelter for several generations of hardworking residents for more than 100 years, was more than ready for a complete renovation. Several haphazard additions had resulted in a chopped-up room layout which, when combined with outdated mechanicals and structural issues, presented a daunting challenge. The setting, offering magnificent “big sky” views of the Chesapeake Bay, inspired the new homeowners to forge ahead with their vision of a complete transformation for their home. The entire interior structure of the house was gutted with the exception of the original staircase and one wall. Structural issues were remedied, new plumbing and electrical was installed throughout. The result is a “brand new” Eastern Shore homestead with all the modern comforts to be enjoyed in a classic waterfront setting for years to come.
Bungalow Galore
This classic 1920’s bungalow had served multiple owners and functions through the last century. When the current owners purchased this property, their main goal was to preserve the character of its unique period style while transforming the interior to accommodate their large and active family. A previously added separate apartment wing was reoriented into a generously sized ground floor Master Bedroom Suite complete with private porch and access to the new rear garden area. All of the original small rooms on the first floor were opened up to create an open floor plan featuring a New Great Room, Dining Area, Kitchen with Breakfast Nook, New Mud Room and Laundry Area. The pitch of the roof was raised to provide additional headroom on the second floor for three new ensuite bedrooms and a large Family Room. A new Garage was built with a second floor Office creating a private enclosure for a new pool in the backyard.
Harborside Cottage Upgrade
The transformation of this serviceable but dated home on the edge of St. Michaels harbor was inspired by the Craftsman style coastal cottages observed by the homeowners during many years of cruising the east coast. Updates and upgrades included doubling the Kitchen size, redesigning all the bathrooms, improving all interior finishes, enhancing trim details and materials and replacing the windows and doors throughout. A small bedroom was converted into a new home office with custom built-ins and an extra-large screen porch was added to enhance views of the harbor. Exterior improvements included new cementatious siding with durable composite trim materials, a fresh color scheme and the addition of two miniature gable dormers on the front elevation. A relocated brick walkway guides guests to a gracious new front entry door. Complementing the home's transformation, improvements to the adjacent Garage included the addition of a workshop, new "carriage house" style paneled garage doors and craftsman style architectural details.
Village Renewal
This vintage residence had undergone several remodels and additions during its long history. While the most recent homeowners wanted to preserve its historic charm they were faced with several structural and esthetic challenges. Two flat roofed earlier additions at the rear of the house were removed reducing the house to its original footprint. This original structure was jacked up to facilitate the construction of a completely new foundation. A new two story addition was added at the rear creating much needed space for three bedrooms and a modern bath for the second floor. The original interior space was completely gutted opening space for a new stairway to the second floor, a ground floor Master Suite, New Kitchen and New Great Room opening onto a screened porch. Exterior improvements included the restoration of a long hidden second floor window on the front elevation, all new energy efficient windows, durable cementatious siding and a fresh new color scheme.
Rolles Creek Reconstruction
A modest 1 1/2 story home on Rolle’s Creek caught the eye of a professional urban couple who were looking forward to an active retirement lifestyle on the Eastern Shore. While the home’s interior layout and materials were quite dated, its beautiful setting featured mature trees and an expansive rear lawn offering broad views to a peaceful creek. A staged plan was developed to remodel the property on a schedule to coincide with retirement plans. Unfinished attic space over a separate garage and workshop was converted into a finished studio apartment providing shelter for the couple during the project and now serves as a convenient guest cottage. During the demolition process in the main house, extensive damage and structural framing issues presented themselves resulting in the decision to completely dismantle the home down to its foundation. Initial challenges provided the unexpected opportunity to rebuild and upgrade all structures and systems resulting in a dramatic transformation.
Dramatic Waterfront Transformation
This modest frame house on Edge Creek was in need of an inspired vision to realize its full potential as a gracious waterfront homestead. A one story structure on a concrete slab at the right was completely demolished and replaced with a new central gable structure featuring a traditional columned porch with a standing seam metal roof. A handcrafted new front door opens into a dramatic two story Foyer where a custom designed staircase rises to an airy loft housing the family’s grand piano. A completely new two story wing was constructed on the right side adding extensively to the home’s footprint and supplying ample space on the second floor for a spacious Master Suite. On the left side, the original Living/Dining/Kitchen area on the first floor was redesigned to create a private in-law suite for this multigenerational family. Upstairs are two children’s bedrooms and a hobby room. A favorite feature of the homeowners is the unique two-story attached gazebo at the rear offering tranquil views of the pool area and waterfront.
A House Grows Up
There is nothing like the imminent arrival of a new baby to inspire homeowners to “think bigger” and consider a plan for expanding their home. This quaint one story cottage with harbor views had an existing el projecting off the rear which was extended to create additional space for a large open Kitchen, spacious new Great Room, new Laundry area and new side entrance Foyer. An increase in pitch on all existing roof structures along with the addition of a large shed dormer on the side elevation and two new gable dormers on the front created space for a completely new second story with full headroom. A new Master Suite was designed along with a new Nursery and expanded storage areas providing much needed extra space. The addition of a gable roof sheltering the front door combined with new windows, shutters, trim and siding completed the transformation of this small house into a comfortable family home.
